The app allows you to view assigned workouts, work through each exercise and watch video demonstrations of them, and mark off each completed set. You can also update the weight or number of reps you managed, save everything, and review your stats from previous times you performed the same workout. You can add and update your measurements, view trends over time, and add progress photos.

It takes a little time to figure out what weights you’ll need for each exercise but it is worth it in the end. And no, one weight is not enough! Not all muscles are created equal so you cannot use the same weight to exercise all of them.

STEP 1. Practice the correct form with light dumbbells until you’ve mastered it.

STEP 2. Decide on the type of exercise you want to do; build strength or build muscle tone. This will determine how many repetitions you will do. Building strength generally you want to use a HEAVIER weight and one that you can only perform 8-12 repetitions with. (if you have more experience you can even use a heavier weight and only do 6 or so reps). If you want to build muscle tone then generally you’ll want to use a medium/lighter weight and perform about more than 12 reps. If you can perform more than 25 reps then the weight is probably TOO LIGHT. This is where most people go wrong. Your weights should be at least as heavy as things you lift in real life; ie your bag, your kids, the groceries, loaded snow shovel, etc.

STEP 3. Learn to Lift Properly – Learning how to perform each exercise properly is KEY and if you are unsure of how to do something correctly you should get guidance. Just like using the wrong weight, lifting incorrectly can cause muscle imbalances and raises the risk of injury. You should be able to perform each repetition with the same speed as the first but should reach a point called “failure”. This is the point where you could no longer do a proper lift. This is when you STOP. Take a break and move onto the next set or exercise.

STEP 4. Track how sets and reps you do during every workout, with how much weight, in a notebook.
